Uptown Partners Business Association (UPBA) is an association of businesses located in Cleveland's Uptown neighborhoods of Buckeye-Shaker, Fairfax, Glenville, Hough, Little Italy and University Circle. We are dedicated to increasing the public's awareness of our business members' offerings and to organizing initiatives which enhance the quality of life for residents and the overall experience for visitors. Our members share a common goal of providing quality products and services, resulting in strong customer satisfaction and sustainable business growth. We consider our businesses to be paramount to the continued growth and vitality of the area in and around University Circle.
Member Spotlight
John Anoliefo, Executive Director of Famicos Foundation, still remembers why he applied for the Executive Director position in 2003 - he wanted a challenge. When he received an offer from Famicos, John knew that he was up for it. He went from managing a small staff of 7 to managing 20 plus employees and overseeing all of Famicos day to day social service and housing operations. The organization has a variety of services available to participants, including but not limited to: Homeownership, Affordable Housing, Before and After School, and Senior Citizen programs.
Famicos Foundation has a long history of social services and housing. Famicos was founded by Sister Henrietta Gorres who sought out single mothers, giving them a house and teaching them self-sufficiency skills. She recruited her own family members to help restore homes and assist in teaching the women the skills they needed to flourish.
Today, Famicos has become Cleveland's source for affordable housing as well as youth and senior programming and social services.The organization's success is built on the idea of helping one family at a time by teaching them skills that will build confidence.In partnership with Beech Brook, caseworkers are assigned to help each family. The hope is to build confidence in a person by supporting them with education and job opportunities. Some organizations use statistics and numbers to define success, while Famicos measures success by the number of families that are reunited. Many times, mothers who have insufficient housing are at dire risk for losing custody of their children. Famicos provides housing options for mothers in this situation so they can begin the process of regaining custody of their children. Other social services that Famicos provides include GED classes, career readiness, computer classes and many others that provide individuals with the tools necessary to succeed and become self-sufficient.
Famicos currently employs 58 employees, 48 of which are full time. Some employees are individuals who have directly benefited from Famicos' services. Famicos Foundation was one of UPBA's founding members in 2008. It made sense for University Circle Inc. and Famicos to form a stronger partnership.John sits on the Executive Committee and the Community Relations Committee and is a very dedicated member of Uptown Partners.
