Do You Know Your Lincoln?
Do You Know Your Lincoln?, a new exhibit features the extensive WRHS Lincoln collection. The special show runs through early 2011 and launches a series of exhibits, events, and programs at WRHS paying tribute to Abraham Lincoln and the American Civil War. This is in honor of the Bicentennial of the birth of Lincoln in 2009 and the Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War beginning in 2011.
The entire exhibit is drawn from the WRHS unusually rich Lincoln collections and will “test” the museum visitor’s knowledge of the history of America’s 16th President. It places the election of Lincoln in the larger context of the outbreak and public perception of the Civil War, and connects the President to the City of Cleveland.

Under the Covers: Quilts from the WRHS Collection
Vintage 18th-, 19th- and 20th-century quilts from the significant Western Reserve Historical Society collection are on display for the first time in nearly 20 years. The new exhibition, "Under the Covers," is open now through October 2010 in the Chisholm Halle Costume Wing of the Society’s University Circle Complex. Highlights of the 30 quilts on display include an 18th-century pieced quilt made from dressmaking remnants and worn garments, and a 19th-century presentation quilt made by the Daughters of the American Revolution and presented to President and Mrs. William McKinley.

A new multimedia exhibit at WRHS, Soul Soldiers: African Americans and the Vietnam Era, explores the issues, actions, reactions and expressions of life and culture of African Americans as they were impacted by Civil Rights and the war in Vietnam.
A new multimedia exhibit at WRHS, Soul Soldiers: African Americans and the Vietnam Era, explores the issues, actions, reactions and expressions of life and culture of African Americans as they were impacted by Civil Rights and the war in Vietnam.
Soul Soldiers demonstrates that Vietnam was no isolated battleground; it was a crucible for African American soldiers’ emerging political and cultural consciousness. Stories are told through artifacts, photographs, art, an original documentary, oral histories and audio stations featuring 30 songs from the Vietnam era. The exhibit is particularly meaningful for WRHS in that it is our first venture into exploring the Vietnam War and its effect on our culture and society. Soul Soldiers was developed by Pittsburgh’s Senator John Heinz History Center and is generously sponsored by the African American Archives Auxiliary of WRHS. It runs through November 27, 2010.

Habitat for Humanity Tool Drive
University Circle Inc. is proud to support Greater Cleveland Habitat for Humanity during their second annual Tool Drive. The county-wide tool drive asks residents, organizations, and businesses to donate new and used tools, as well as cabinets, sinks, building materials, and appliances to Habitat for Humanity. The donated items will be sold at the organizations ReStore, a building materials store that sells rescued, recycled and donated building materials, tools and household items at a fraction of standard retail costs. The proceeds support Habitat for Humanity’s mission to build and rehabilitate homes throughout the city for those in need while keeping tons of materials out of local landfills.
Greater Cleveland Habitat for Humanity has built and rehabbed more than 160 homes in Cleveland and 240 homes overseas. University Circle Inc. is committed to collecting donations to support these efforts, and you can help. Clean out your garage or workspace or save materials after a home renovation. Every little bit helps.
Drop off your donated items at the University Circle Visitor and Living in the Circle Center. Hours are from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. This hands-on exhibition explores sound and music in nature and in life. Dog Days of Summer
You know you've always wanted to bring your canine best buddy with you when you stroll our ten acres of fabulous gardens. Well, now you can!
Get a leash on your dog (please) every Sunday from June 5 through August 29 (12 – 5 pm). Make a grand entrance through the Albert Paley-designed Kohl Gate on Wade Park Oval. And have your pick of gardens through which to meander.
Water and treats will be available at spots throughout the Garden.

Finding a home near work has never been easier! Now is the time to take advantage of a special employee-assisted home ownership program known as Greater Circle Living. Greater Circle Living is a forgivable loan program that provides down payment assistance to eligible employees* of non-profit institutions in and around University Circle. Rental assistance and exterior home repair funds are also available to employees of qualifying non-profits. To date, seventeen employees have received down payment assistance to purchase a home close to work. You could be the next!
Location:The program was designed to improve access to housing in the Greater University Circle Area and to reduce commute times and costs. Another goal of Greater Circle Living is to increase the awareness of the incredible housing opportunities available in the area. The neighborhoods that are eligible for Greater Circle Living funds include Buckeye/Shaker, Fairfax, Hough, Little Italy, University Circle and Glenville. The program includes financial assistance, help with the application process, training for home buyers and assistance with budgeting and managing finances. Employees participating in Greater Circle Living are also eligible for housing assistance programs offered by the City of Cleveland and some other agencies. And don’t forget, the federal government has extended and expanded its homebuyer tax credit. It’s a great time to invest in Cleveland’s fastest growing neighborhoods!

Midwest Modern: The Color Woodcuts of Mabel Hewit

This exhibition, organized by the Cleveland Museum of Art, focuses on little-known Cleveland artist Mabel Hewit and features 76 works from the museum’s own collection supplemented with loans. It is the first museum exhibition to explore the work of Hewit, who learned to make white-line color woodcuts from Blanche Lazzell, the most important practitioner of the technique. Special printmaking demonstrations by artist Ruth Hogan will take place on July 17 and 18 (see website for details). Shipwreck Camp 2010
Join us for a virtual adventure to find a shipwreck in Lake Erie. Inspired by the research and exploration of Dr. Robert Ballard, finder of the wreckage of the Titanic, this camp will engage campers in field science and exploration weekdays from 9:30a.m. – 3:30p.m. This camp is a collaboration with Cleveland Lakefront State Park (ODNR), Cuyahoga County Public Library, and Case’s Center for Science and Mathematics Education to learn and explore.
